Provides safe, quality patient care in the operating room for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in accordance with the established procedures of the Ambulatory Surgical Center. !

Checks the schedule for any additions, changes or cancellations.

Checks surgeon's card carefully with the surgical technician / nurse to see that everything is prepared for the case.

Performs and documents initial and ongoing assessments on pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients by meeting the following standards.

Verifies patient's identity by obtaining proper information.

Assesses health status of the patient experiencing surgical intervention by collecting pertinent health data from their observation chart.

Assesses physical status of the patient experiencing surgical intervention by collecting pertinent health data from her observation and the chart.

Assesses psychosocial status of the patient experiencing surgical intervention.

Implements medical and nursing plans of care for patients which reflect pertinent age specific, physical, psychological, environmental and discharge planning fa! ctors by meeting the following standards.

Reports any! unusual circumstance concerning the patient's condition or the procedure to the surgeon and / or anesthesiologist. Completes occurrence report as indicated.

Assists anesthesiologist during induction.

Makes sure the surgical tech/ nurse have everything they need before starting the prep, including pouring solutions, double-checking the local anesthesia with the surgical tech / nurse, etc.

Positions patient and performs surgical prep

Connects bovie and suction, after patient is draped.

Checks all supplies for the next case. Leaves room only when necessary and for minimal periods

Performs closing sponge and needle count. Places specimen in a container with formalin when indicated. Makes sure the specimen is labeled correctly. Gives frozen sections to pathologist without formalin immediately upon excision.

Helps move patient from OR table. Physician and nurse should accompany patient to the Recovery Room if needed,! and if requested, giving the receiving nurse a report from the operating room.

Helps clean the room in preparation for the next case, if a case is immediately following.

Notifies Perioperative Coordinator at least half an hour before the next scheduled case if there willbe delays on the following cases.

Participates with instrument processing and case cart preparation in Sterile Supply Decontamination.

Cleans and restocks the operating room jointly with surgical tech / nurse, as needed. Wipes down all furniture / counters with disinfectant.

Counts and verifies narcotics with another RN, if needed.

Selects scheduled cases for the next day in Sterile Supply (joint responsibility of nurses and ORT’s).

Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient and environmental safety factors.

Monitors patient for safety-related issues. Provides patient instruction regarding safety issues.

Notifies approp! riate authority of potential and actual safety hazards and takes immedi! ate, proper intervention to correct.

Consistently wears personal protective equipment appropriate for each situation.

Demonstrates proper aseptic technique and practices.

Ensures work areas and equipment are clean and orderly to allow safe and efficient work. Ensures that patient care supplies are available in appropriate quantities and functioning properly.

Participates in quality improvement and evaluation activities and implements measures to ensure that ASC, AAAHC and other quality standards are met.

Assists in ensuring that productivity and QI data is compiled and reports prepared for ASC management and regulatory bodies.

Understands, applies, supports and follows department/ASC policies, procedures and standards at all times.

Helps ensure that inventory and stock levels are maintained at a minimum level. Identifies and implements opportunities to standardize products, reduce waste and reduce cost.

! Maintains required professional license and/or certification.

Attends ACS meetings and in-service educational opportunities as required.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

This is a full time position at the Midtown Surgery Center.

Required Skills

Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing; BSN or equivalent preferred.

1-2 years current OR experience required.

Able to read and interpret EKG monitor.

Knowledge of anesthetic agents used â€" inhalation, moderate sedation and injection; the usual dosages, symptoms of and toxic amounts, duration of action, contra indications, antidotes, etc.

Able to operate and troubleshoot equipment found in surgery.

Able to immediately recognize and institute treatment for the following OR emergencies:

Cardiac arrhythmias

Cardiac arrest

Airway obstruction

Respiratory arrest

Hemorrhage

Vagal respo! nse

Syncope

Shock

Toxic overdose of local an! esthesia and moderate sedation (IV conscious)

Hypertension

Hypotension

Malignant hyperthermia

Latex allergy

Anticipates / adapts to sudden, unexpected changes in procedure.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with physicians, patients and other employees.

Interacts appropriately with individuals on a variety of levels.

Must have leadership ability, good planning and organizational skills and a desire to promote good interpersonal relationships within the department.

Must be detail oriented with the ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple tasks.

Demonstrates ability, willingness and initiative to substitute as clinical coordinator on an “as needed” basis and participate in unit patient care management and leadership.

Must be able to withstand stressful situations.

Willing to work overtime, and / or change hours, if staffing needs require.
Maintains required professional license and/or certificates.
