Job Functions and Responsibilities:
1.

Accomplishes complete patient assessment and evaluation of each patient prior to

surgery or treatment.

Identifies patient arm band and greets patient and family

Checks and assures that physician’s preoperative orders are complete.

Verifies surgical site verbally with patient

Assesses patient’s understanding of procedure and checks surgical consent

for accuracy and completeness.

Obtains signature on surgical consent when appropriate

Obtains history and identifies physical status

Obtains vital signs upon admission, recheck if abnormal

Documents assessment and nursing care on appropriate records.

Reports test abnormalities and any other pertinent information to surgeon,

anesthesiologist, operating room staff and other preoperative area staf! f as necessary.

Assesses patient’s level of fear/anxiety and provides comfort and support for

patient and family.

Maintains patient’s privacy, comfort and safety in the holding area, i.e. bed

rails up, brakes on stretchers, etc.

2.

Implements care of the patient in PACU.

Assesses patient for patency of airway and continually monitors adequacy of

ventilation and provides airway support as needed.

Performs assessment of patient and evaluates patient by Aldrete scoring

system.

Checks dressing and/or operative site and reports abnormalities to surgeon.

Provides a safe, warm, caring environment for patient and family.

Understands usual PACU drugs thoroughly and recognizes need for reversal drugs.

Administer medications as needed.

Achieves safe and optimum level of anesthesia and relief from nausea/vomiting.

Recognizes emergency situa! tions

and responds effectively in a calm, controlled manner.
Provides appropriate information to nursing personnel re:
patient status when transferring patients from PACU to other patient care areas.

Assists in transporting patients from the PACU to other patient care areas.

Always thoroughly documents all of the above on patient’s records.

3.

Prepares the patient for discharge from the

Surgery

Center

.

Assures that all patients meet all discharge criteria and that the patient and

family are given written discharge instructions and understands them.

Vital signs are stable and IV discontinued and charted that catheter was intact

and what the site looked like.

Always thoroughly documents all of the above on patient’s records.

4.

Establishes, promotes and maintains positive working relationships with internal

and external customers.

Readily assists other staff members as n! eeded. Continually strives to be a

team player in order to support fellow employees and assure efficient functioning of the Operating Rooms, PACU and Patient Care areas.

Provides support and comfort to patients and their families as needed.

Maintains patient confidentiality and privacy.

Communicates well with physicians striving to anticipate and meet their needs.

Shares knowledge with other staff and supports others in the learning process.

Participates in and supports activities related to Best Practices and Quality Improvement Initiatives.

Communicates with the Clinical Nurse Manger directly regarding concerns, and assists in development of solutions to problems.

5.

Demonstrates dependability and accountability.

Reports to work on time as scheduled.

Willingly accepts assignment, demonstrates flexibility and floats to other work areas as needed.

Requests time off ac! cording to established policy.

Maintains a clean, neat and pro! fessional appearance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Education Required:
Graduate of an accredited

School !

of

Nursing

.

Experience Preferred:
Previous experience in Post Anesthesia Care Nursing

Licensure/Certifications

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Tennessee

CPR certified in Basic Life Support:
ACLS

required.

PALS certification required.
