Responsibilities:

Relationships - They don?t care what you know until they know that you care. The job requires relationshipbuilding at every level of the organization. Support players through failure, and push players to improve despite success. Get to know the person first. Trust is the most important component in relationships and hitting coaches should be striving intentionally, every day, to build trusting relationships. Goal: Build Trusting Relationships.

Strategy - The hitting coach is responsible for helping the player mold their approach (their specific intentionfor each at-bat, dependent on pitcher and game situation). Hitting strategy involves where to look in space, supported by confidence built from a trusting relationship between player and coach. Coaches must grow fluent in delivering pitcher tendencies (speed/location) in all situations of the game. Goal: Feed the computational mind of the hitter using developmentally appropriate language to optimize approach and game preparation.

Tactics - Cultivate adjustable hitters. This requires assisting with timing, effort level, pitcher tipping, or glaring technical problems arising in competition. Adjustability could be as simple as a reminder of the at-bats? intention or as complex as a mid-game adjustment. Hitting coaches are expected to provide players with visual reference points for each at-bat that indicate where the player could be looking in space and intend to hit the ball. (e.g., Look in and try to hit the ball to the center of the batter?s eye) while guiding the player to create external cues for themselves. Goal: Keep the player focused on the task at hand during the game and in training.

Work Expectations - Hitting coaches contribute to the player plan and movement assessment (dependent upon fluency in each area). They report a general summary of the week?s variable, intentional, and challenging offensive training using concrete examples, and small prospect approach reports to the hitting coordinator via Microsoft form. HCs are expected to cultivate trusting relationships, develop fluency in the application of information, and build adjustable hitters.
