The Director of Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Na! shville
campus of the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) will be responsible for
all areas including clinical, administrative, education and research in the
Intensive Care setting.
He/she will report to the Chief of Anesthesiology or
designee at TVHS.
He/she shall also function as an attending Anesthesiologist
for cardiac and non cardiac surgery at Nashville.

Clinical Responsibilities (60% of
time)

Managing patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery procedures
including open heart surgery â€" on and off pump, valve replacement, laser lead
removal, ventricular assist device and intra aortic balloon device.

Supervision of CRNA staff, physician residents, and medical students in the
comprehensive medical management of all patient care in the perioperative
period.

Administrative
/Program/Evaluation/Outcome Measurement/Research (25% of time)

The incumbent is responsible ! for ensuring that all business operations and
health infor! mation practices within Perioperative areas specifically the SICU,
are being measured for quantity and quality of the work performed, and conducted
in continuing compliance with the laws, regulations and standards which govern
those activities, the reasonable expectations of VHA's business partners, and
the highest standards of Compliance and Business Integrity. The incumbent serves
as a senior advisor to the Chief of Anesthesiology or designee.
Develops and
provides ongoing analysis of performance measures for services and
multidisciplinary pain management clinic, such as no show rates, missed
opportunities, case cancellation, 1 st case starts, O.R. efficiency,
and perioperative performance measures.

Academic/Teaching/Training:
(15% of
time)

Teaching medical students and residents as required.
Taking part in
departmental Journal Club and M & M activities. Initiate a clinical research
progr! am focused on cardiovascular disease and perioperative management.

The preferred

candidate will possess:
a.
Attained a Doctoral degree from a
school of medicine or school of osteopathic medicine.

b.
Completion of Anesthesiology
residency with emphasis on cardiac anesthesia.

c.
Completion of Critical Care
Fellowship

d.
Board Certified or eligible by
the American Board of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

e.

Professional Medical Licensure:
full, current and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state,
territory or commonwealth of the United States.

f.
Current BLS and ACLS
certification.

g.
Leadership acumen sufficient to
provide direction for complex programs in the delivery of perioperative services
to veterans.

h.
Management experience with
strong administrative and interpersonal ski! lls

i.
Demonstrated skills in
providing clinical inter! face with academic affiliates and other key
stakeholders.

j.
Management experience
regarding university generated education programs and specialty training
programs.

k.
Demonstrated commitment to an
interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery

l.
Documented ability to
coordinate a broad continuum of programs.

m.
Demonstrates abilities to work
well within an executive team.
