Job Description
Department: Surgicenter
Job Title: PACU Nurse
Hour! s: PRN
Reports to: Team Leader/Surgicenter Manager
Purpose of job: Monitors patients post-anesthesia and discharges them to the appropriate level of care. Perform multiple tasks concurrently.
Qualifications:
1. Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program and have a current Tennessee nursing license
2. Must have knowledge of OSHA guidelines
3. Must know good body mechanics
4. BLS required; PALS and ACLS certification recommended
5. Previous experience as an recovery nurse or similar care of patients post anesthesia
6. Must be able to handle multiple tasks and work without close supervision
7. Must be able to work as deemed necessary by the supervisor
8. Must be self-motivated, professional and maintain a positive attitude
9. Must have good verbal and written communication skills
Job Duties:
Assumes the role of patient advocate by protecting the patientsâ safe! ty, rights, privacy and dignity.
Records accurate dat! a in nurses notes
Reports physical findings or changes to physician or CRNA
Assures that charts are complete and reports irregularities to appropriate personnel
Assists in emergency situations
Assures that all post-op orders and procedures are performed
Administers post-op medications as ordered, assists or completes veni-punctures
Checks equipment and supplies
Assists with orientation and in-service education on new personnel
Responsible for receiving and dispensing narcotics
Relives personnel as needed or required
Maintains a safe, quiet, clean environment for patient and self
Maintains current CPR license
Maintains good health, personality, and has satisfactory hearing and eyesight
Able to handle stressful situations for short periods of time and stand for several hours
Uses good body mechanics and is able to lift 50 to 60 pounds
Promotes! open communication with family and health professionals regarding care of the patient
Abides by employee handbook in regards to sick time, vacations and holidays as well as dress code
Is knowledgeable of OSHA guidelines
Assists with transfer of patients
Assists with other tasks, clerical and non-nursing function as needed
Patient will achieve a stable, comfortable status by discharge
Essential Functions:
1. Ability to meet or exceed patient, doctor and staff expectations with quality service
2. Assess patients vital signs
3. Answer patient and family inquiries
4. Contacts patient or family member day after surgery to assess outcomes.
5. Education of patient/family member about post operaive care
6. Stocks linen cabinet and ice each morning and as needed throughout the day
7. Perform other duties as assigned by Team Leader or Manager.
Performance Criteria:
1. Ability! to work with a team approach toward providing quality of patient care !
2. Ability to respond to the needs of the department and the patient in a busy environment
3. Ability to follow instructions given by physicians and supervisor
