Administers general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical and obstetrical procedures. Performs anesthesia-related procedures at the discretion of and under the supervision of an attending anesthesiologist. Evaluates patients preoperatively and, in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist, formulates and carries out an anesthesia care plan including monitoring and recording patient reaction to anesthesia and modifying the anesthetic plan accordingly. Safely transports! patients to and from an anesthetizing location and ensures ap! propriate care during the postoperative period. Supervises, instructs, and counsels student nurse anesthetists to ensure patient safety. Interacts with staff and patients in a way that shows respect and consideration for the individual.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:
  • Evaluates the patient preoperatively and prepares for the anesthetic.
  • Visits patients prior to surgery and compiles a complete medical history, performs a physical examination, and reviews all pertinent medical records.
  • Consults with the attending anesthesiologist to formulate an anesthesia care plan. Informs the patient of the anesthetic options, risks and benefits, and then answers patient questions concerning the anesthetic. Explains the anesthesia care team.
  • Notifies anesthesia technicians regarding special equipment requirements for the anesthetic, such as invasive monitoring, extra IVs, rapid infusion devices, etc.
  • Performs a compl! ete anesthesia machine check, prepares the appropriate medications, and completes the room set up.
  • Transports patient to the anesthetizing location when deemed necessary. Utilizes appropriate transport monitors, oxygen, and ventilatory support.
  • Assures presence of patent IV access if required for the anesthetic.
  • Administers general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical, obstetrical, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Transports patient to the operating room, supervises the transfer of the patient to the operating table and places appropriate monitors.
  • Induces general or monitored anesthesia care under the supervision and personal presence of an attending anesthesiologist.
  • Performs other anesthesia related procedures including neuraxial blockade, insertion of invasive lines, fiberoptic intubation, etc. at the discretion of, and under the direct supervision of the responsible staff anesthesio! logist.
  • Assists with positioning of the patient and padding of! all pressure points to prevent injury.
  • Develops and maintains an accurate and legible anesthetic record throughout the procedure.
  • Monitors appropriate patient functions according to the Anesthesia Department's standards of care and patient condition.
  • Identifies and assesses complications of the anesthetic, communicates with the attending anesthesiologist and initiates appropriate treatment.
  • Manages the patient's airway using a variety of techniques including endotracheal intubation, laryngeal mask airway, mask ventilation, etc.
  • Exercises vigilance, conscientiousness, and accuracy when administering anesthetics.
  • Ensures the security and accurate accounting of all controlled drugs used during anesthesia.
  • Manages the patient's care at the completion of the operative procedure, ensures safety during transport and the availability of appropriate care during the post anesthetic period.
  • Utilizes appropriate m! onitors, oxygen, and ventilatory support during transport to the post anesthesia care unit.
  • Gives an accurate and complete report to the post anesthetic care provider including a summary of the intraoperative course and potential post anesthetic complications.
  • Assesses complications and potential complications in the immediate post anesthetic period, implements appropriate actions, and notifies the attending anesthesiologist.
  • Remains with the patient in the care unit until vital signs are stable or a qualified individual assumes care.
  • Responds to calls within the hospital for emergency airway maintenance.
  • Responds to STAT calls and performs endotracheal intubation or otherwise manages the airway of patients in full arrest as required.
  • Administers medications and performs endotracheal intubation, endotracheal tube exchanges, or other airway management on patients who are not in full arrest in the presence of an attending ! anesthesiologist.
  • Provides instruction and education for affil! iating student nurse anesthetists.
  • Effectively supervises and monitors students to ensure top quality care to patients.
  • Guides students in the preparation of the anesthesia care plan to ensure a safe anesthetic.
  • Evaluates student performance according to the guidelines furnished by the affiliated school of anesthesia.
  • Counsels students and reports critical incidents to the immediate supervisor as well as the program director.
  • Interacts with patients and staff in a way that shows compassion, respect and consideration for the individual.
  • Demonstrates compassion and understanding toward patients through words and deeds.
  • Considers the patient's needs the top priority.
  • Interacts with all individuals equally without regard to race, religion, national origin, or disease process.
  • Handles all conflicts through appropriate channels and means as designated by the Department of Anesthesiology or the Medica! l Center.
Qualifications:
Job requires Graduate of an accredited discipline specific program and 0 years of experience or the equivalent.
