The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Quantitative Equity co-op student/intern for the Fall 2023 (September to December) and Winter 2024 (January to April) work terms (for 4 or 8 months) to work with the team in providing research and analytics support on topics relating to alpha and risk modeling.

The Quantitative Equity co-op/intern will work within our Public Markets department. This is a great opportunity to learn about factor-based quantitative investing. You will apply your knowledge and skills to support the development and implementation of quantitative investment strategies, conduct data analyses, and help develop proprietary analytical tools and systems.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
The Public Markets group manages a portfolio of fixed income, equity, and absolute return investments utilizing both index and active management strategies. The group invests in Canada, the U.S., and internationally in both the developed and emerging markets. In addition, BCI is a leader in responsible investing actively integrating environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) into our investment analysis and decision making. The Quantitative Equity team manages over $7 billion in Canadian, Global, and Global ESG mandates.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Work under the supervision of members of the Quantitative Equity team on various projects
- Use programming (primarily Python and SQL) to enhance the proprietary systems and tools built and managed by the team
- Conduct research and data analysis to enhance the quantitative investment strategies managed by the team
- Participate in regular team research meetings and discuss new ideas and projects
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Students currently enrolled in a graduate-level or postgraduate program in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or other analytical discipline
- Strong programming skills, with experience in Python and SQL preferred
- Interest in pursuing a career in the investment field, gaining quantitative investment experience, and exploring what the industry has to offer
- Passion for numbers, and strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Experience with data analysis and machine learning techniques is a plus.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
- Exhibits a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills
- Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining excellent product quality and attention to detail
- Team player who has the drive to continue learning, excel, and grow in a team-oriented and dynamic environment
- Strong work ethic and commitment to the highest ethical standards

- Travel: if coming to Victoria / Vancouver for this work term, BCI will provide a fixed-rate travel allowance based on your location
- All co-ops/internships will need to be completed in person at our Victoria/Vancouver office. We are piloting a hybrid program whereby employees may work from home up to two days per week. Please note, some positions are not eligible for hybrid work.
